Grid Modernization vs. Smart Grid: What’s the Difference?

The U.S. electrical grid is being updated to meet modern power capacity and reliability needs. “Grid modernization” and “smart grid” are two terms commonly associated with this process, but they differ in significant ways.

The grid is the network of power lines, transformers, substations and other equipment that delivers electricity to homes and businesses across the country. Much of the existing U.S. grid is over 30 years old and is being updated to meet modern power capacity and reliability needs.

“Grid modernization” and “smart grid” are two terms commonly associated with this process, and they’re often used interchangeably. However, the two terms actually refer to different levels of the overall project to update the grid. Understanding this difference will give you deeper insight into how the grid works and how its future will take shape.

Grid Modernization

Grid modernization is a more overarching concept than the smart grid. It refers to the entire process of upgrading the traditional electrical grid to make it more efficient, resilient and sustainable. This modernization is a critical need for our power infrastructure and a key to having reliable and cost-effective electricity.

Grid modernization encompasses a wide range of technologies and improvements. These include upgrading the power infrastructure (transformers, substations, etc.) and integrating renewable energy, distributed generation and smart grid technologies. The smart grid, then, can be thought of as a subset of grid modernization.

Smart Grid

The smart grid is a set of advanced technologies that are also key to improving reliability and cost-effectiveness. Existing transmission and distribution systems will be enhanced through the use of digital communication, information technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The smart grid includes key components and capabilities that can increase efficiency as well as reduce downtime and brownouts:

  • Advanced metering infrastructure. Smart meters and communication networks that provide real-time data on energy usage and enable two-way communication between utilities and customers.
  • Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices to monitor and collect data on grid performance. Detects issues in real time and enables predictive maintenance to prevent failures before they occur.
  • AI and data analytics. AI algorithms process large volumes of grid data to predict energy supply and demand trends and identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement.

Additional advantages of smart grid technologies include cost reductions, reduced energy losses, stronger security and increased customer empowerment and engagement.

Close, but Different

So, as you can see, grid modernization and the smart grid are closely intertwined, but they mean somewhat different things. Grid modernization is the broader project of updating the grid to meet current and future needs, while the smart grid is a critical part of that broader initiative.
