PJM Curtailment During Heat Dome
PJM’s electricity demand soared past 160,000 MW during the late June 2025 heat dome, marking the highest summer peak in over a decade. Discover how these historic peaks—and soaring capacity prices—could impact your business, and learn what proactive steps you can take to manage costs this summer.
PJM's Highest Summer Electricity Demand Since 2011
During the week of June 23–26, 2025, PJM experienced its highest summer electricity demand since 2011, with system load surging past 160,000 MW. This was driven by a widespread heat dome across the Midwest, and an increase of data center load.
First Opportunity in 2025 for PJM’s C&I Customers to Curtail Load
This was the first opportunity in 2025 for PJM’s C&I customers to curtail load to manage peaks for PY 2026/2027 Peak Load Contribution (PLC) planning purposes. These peak demand events are important because your business’s PLC directly affects your capacity charges. This year, the new capacity auction price jumped to $270, almost ten times higher than last year.
