These periods put a real strain on the grid, and often electric rates can be higher. You can lower your energy costs, and give the grid a break, by taking steps to reduce or shift your energy load.

These simple, low-cost strategies can help shift your energy use to periods when there is less stress on the grid:

• Reduce lighting levels in common areas and low-traffic areas.
• Turn off lights in unoccupied areas.
• Adjust temperature settings slightly in occupied zones and even higher in occupied areas.
• Dim or turn off lights in alternate fixtures or rows.
• Reset chilled water temperatures slightly higher.
• Turn off one or more banks of escalators and elevators.
• Schedule charging of forklifts and other battery-powered equipment for overnight.
• Shut off or reduce refrigeration load and shut down ancillary equipment, such as lighting or compressors.
